How Many Bugs Are YOU Living With?

According to a recent National Geographic study, people in typical American households are living with up to 500 different types of bugs! Yikes! National Geographic asked an entomologist from N.C. State University in Raleigh to examine what lives alongside us in our homes. The results surprised him. He and his team found 579 species of arthropods (bugs) in their survey of 50 freestanding houses in Raleigh, NC.

What kinds of bugs were found living among us? Many are types you’d expect: spiders, ants, cockroaches, and some fleas. Others are more unusual (to most of us) such as leaf hoppers, gall midgets, and something called book lice. (happy I have a Kindle now) Spiders were found in 99.09% of rooms surveyed. While many of us are afraid of spiders, the vast majority are harmless to humans. If you’ve been bitten by a spider and believe it may be poisonous, do your best to trap it. If you want to keep it alive but slow it down, put it in a container in your refrigerator. If you want it to die but be an intact specimen, put it in the freezer. If you end up needing medical care, take the specimen to the doctor or ER. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to study pictures of the few venomous spiders that live in your area and remember that the vast majority of spiders you will encounter are harmless to humans. Spiders are the natural predators of a lot of other pests, so really they are our pest control friends!
